かつて織物産業によって「絹の都」と呼ばれた八王子は、戦時下に工場の転用や、空襲の被害を経験し、その痕跡は今も地域の景観に残されている。本作は、実際に市内で使われていた力織機の部品を複製し、八王子の産業を象徴する工場建築である鋸屋根の形態と重ね合わせた彫刻作品を中心に構成したインスタレーションである。交通や輸送を象徴する車輪や工場の機械部品に共通する“回転”のイメージを手がかりに、街の風景に積み重なった記憶の断片を呼び起こし、想像でしか届かない過去の風景を今ここにいる自分の実感へと結び直す。

Once known as the “Silk City” for its textile industry, Hachioji experienced factory conversions during wartime and suffered damage from air raids; traces of that history still remain in the local landscape today. This installation centers on sculptural elements that replicate parts of power looms once used in the city, juxtaposed with the form of sawtooth-roof factory architecture—an emblem of Hachioji’s industrial past. Using the image of “rotation,” shared by wheels that symbolize transport and by mechanical components of factory machinery, the work evokes fragments of memory layered within the cityscape, and reconnects a past landscape—reachable only through imagination—to the artist’s physical sense of the present, here and now.
